From Military Service to Cybersecurity: My Journey

From Military Service to Cybersecurity: My Journey

Hello, my name is Tony Dennis. After 24 years of service as a Chief Warrant Officer Three (CW3) in the US Army, I retired with a career dedicated primarily to network security and information assurance at the enterprise level. These experiences laid the foundation for my current role as a cybersecurity engineer. In this position, I manage various security initiatives, including Microsoft 365 Security, Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), privilege access management (PAM), and incident response. Every day presents new challenges as I work to monitor and maintain security systems, safeguarding data and users from ever-evolving cyber threats.

I am also on a unique journey as a doctoral student, working toward a degree to graduate in October 2026, the same month I turn sixty. Several factors drive me toward this academic milestone: being the first in my family to attain such a degree, the generous full funding the Department of Veterans Affairs provided, and my passion for cybersecurity. For me, it’s about mastering new technologies and ensuring people are well-trained to defend themselves against malicious actors in today’s digital landscape.

Reflecting on my past, I take great pride in the journey I’ve undertaken. Before joining the Army, I served in the US Navy. During my military service, I earned both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance within just 26 months. Every accomplishment has had a profound impact on shaping both my professional and personal growth.

Outside of my career and academic pursuits, I enjoy the simpler things in life. I’m a passionate fan of the Detroit Lions and Michigan Wolverines football teams. Since 2007, I’ve been running a DJ podcast, mixing Disco and House music to maintain my creative edge. Over the years, I’ve produced more than 375 mixes, reaching a diverse audience around the world and sharing my love for music.

As I move forward, I look forward to the collaborative opportunities, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing that will help me further specialize in cybersecurity and shape the future of this field.

I’m particularly excited about CS875: Futuring and Innovation at Colorado Technical University. This course is more than instructional—it’s a gateway to shaping the future of computer science. I’m diving into the cutting-edge technologies that are dynamically redefining our digital world.

Through CS875, I’m developing critical skills that will distinguish me in this fast-paced field. Whether it’s Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, or the Internet of Things (IoT), I’m gaining the knowledge to be proactive, a problem solver, and a leader in innovation.

Being on the forefront of new concepts, anticipating changes, and driving technological advancements is truly exciting. With its engaging content and forward-thinking approach, CS875 is preparing me to thrive professionally and remain relevant in the ever-evolving technology landscape.
